Shugart Enterprises — a North Carolina construction company targeting first-time, move-up and empty-nester home buyers — has completed more homes certified to the National Green Building Standard than any other home builder in the nation.
By last week, 26 homes built by the Winston-Salem company had completed the National Green Building Certification process. Forty-five additional homes had undergone the first of two inspections required by the standard, while another 15 were just getting underway. [Read more…]

Shugart Enterprises started serving up a special blend of features in its homes this spring: The company’s houses will be certified by two national programs to be energy efficient and green built.
The longtime builder announced earlier this year that it plans to begin building all its new homes to meet federal Energy Star and National Association of Home Builders standards. The green designation includes Energy Star requirements, and both programs require third-party verification to ensure guidelines are met.
A lot of homebuilders are talking “green” these days, but Shugart Enterprises is doing something about energy efficiency.
In a breakthrough for the triad, every home the company has started since April 1 will be dually certified for energy efficiency and sustainability with the National Green Building Certification from the National Association of Home Builders and the Energy Star certification from the US Environmental Protection Agency and the US Department of Energy.
